Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor

This was the U.S. Army issue rifle that was used until they switched to the Model 1892 Krag.  They stopped making the Trapdoors in June, 1893.  This example was made in April-June 1880.  This is apparently a Bannerman cut down rifle.

These are difficult to find in this condition.  The lock plate is the later type without the 1873 date and was used after 1878.  The breech block is dated 1873.  It has the fourth form Model 1879 rear sight.

There are a couple of hairline cracks in the stock that you can see in the pictures.  There is also a chunk of the stock missing from just below the lock plate.  This likely occurred when someone removed the lock plate.  It is not a recent occurrence.  There are no cartouches visible on the left side of the stock.

Finish on the barrel is excellent and the bore appears to be very nice.
