A large BNZ44 coded K98k that is accepted by collectors as being an unmarked SS contract rifle.  The earlier SS rifles had a single rune on the receiver for identification.  Into 1944, it was decided that wasn't a good idea so instead of marking the receiver with a small bnz4 like the military contract rifles, they stamped the SS contract with a large BNZ44 so they were easily identifiable by Steyr.  These rifles are in the same SS serial range as the small bnz4 SS contract rifles are.  On these rifles they also eliminated some of the serial numbering and, at least this example, didn't have trigger guard locking screws installed.
