This is an interesting Luger.  It is a byf 1940 that is described by most collectors as being an out-of-sequence assembly.  This could be the type of gun that the SS would have received.  The grips have been carved and painted.  The Heer was not allowed to alter their weapons but the SS had a lot more latitude.  I believe these grips to have been crafted by an artisan in a concentration camp for a SS officer.  Of course, I can't prove any of this but it is the only explanation I can come up with since I firmly believe the work on the grips to have been done during WWII.
