K98k G Date Luftwaffe Rework that was originally made by Mauser whose secret code was S/42.  This was the second year that K98ks were made for the Wehrmacht.  The date was concealed by using a "G" instead of the actual date of 1935.  Rearming by the Germans was strictly forbidden by the Treaty of Versailles which was signed at the end of WWI.  So, using codes for the dates was a method used to conceal the fact that new weapons were being made.  The "G" was used on other weapons related items such as P.08s and SG84/98 bayonets.

This rifle was reworked by the Luftwaffe and the rework stamp of was placed on the left side of the barrel.  The stamp indicates final rework inspection by the Luftwaffe Zeugamt 4 or Air Force Ordnance Office #4.

This example shows very early use of the laminated stock (with a flat butt plate) as a replacement for the original walnut stock which was apparently damaged.  In the rework process, the rifle was reblued.
