Most all P.08 holsters were made from cowhide. However, in the early '40s, maybe only 1941, some holsters were
made from pigskin. In the same year, some P.38 hard shell holsters were also made from pigskin. The spare mag pouch, closure
strap, belt loops and lift strap on this holster are cowhide. What is very interesting is that the flap hinge is a separate
piece of cowhide as opposed to being an extension of the back like all other Third Reich era P.08 holsters, at least, all
that I have seen. The separate hinge construction is a throwback to the WWI era. I would assume that pigskin was
either not flexible enough or not strong enough to function as a hinge.
The maker of this holster is A. Doppert, Treibriemenfabrik, Kitzingen, secret code of erg who was primarily a driving
belt manufacturer, I assume, using leather.
