At the start of 1945 Mauser was still using the code of byf that they had used since 1941. Soon after
the start of 1945 the code was switched to svw, still using the date of 45. Near the end of production
they started using a secret code of MB to stand for 1945.
So, in that short time frame from January
1, 1945 until April 20, 1945 (when the plant was captured) the Mauser Oberndorf plant placed 3 different
codes on the K98k rifles produced there, byf45, svw45 & svwMB.
This example has a walnut stock
that was apparently a reject from earlier production. Late war, they used up a lot of parts that had
been placed aside. Also, the stock shows chatter marks because the original work on it ceased before
it was completlely finished and, when it was placed back into production, the finish work was far enough
along that they didn't see the need to do the final finishing work. The stock is also a Kreigsmodel
which means that there is no bolt takedown stock disc. There is simply a
hole drilled into the butt plate for that function. Also, there are no
provisions for a bayonet lug or a cleaning rod and the front band is held on
with screws. |
