I am presenting this information for a near life long friend. Mr. Russell J. Ford and his wife Carolyn
were my Sunday school teachers in Okla. City in the late 1950's. I moved away in 1966 and they moved
to Wichita Falls, Texas a year or so later. I kept in touch with them by Christmas card all these years.
I recently discovered that Mr. Ford was in the Navy and served in the Pacific during WWII. After
discovering this I visited Mr. and Mr. Ford and made a tape recording of his Navy service experiences.
Mr. Ford was involved in the landings at Leyte Gulf in the Philippines and at Okinawa.
At that
time I found out about this story involving the Japanese sinking of the USS Indianapolis. Only 316 of
1,199 crew members survived.
Here is Mr. Ford's story.
