Audie Murphy's Letters to Mr. & Mrs. John Cawthon

John Cawthon was a barber in Celeste, Texas and his son (also John) was a buddy of Audie's.  Audie attended school in Celeste.  Audie's father abandoned the family in November, 1940.  Audie had to quit school and work to try to support his Mother and his siblings who were still at home.  In May, 1941, Audie's Mother passed away.  Audie was left on his own but the younger children were placed in an orphanage.  Mr. & Mrs. Cawthon became like parents to Audie.  In fact, in the letters, Audie refers to Mrs. Cawthon as "Mom".

The following, by date, are the letters that I have.  Each page will show the letter and then the written text for the hand written ones as some are hard to read.  I have left some of the misspelling in the written text which shows how little education Audie had received.  He wrote extremely well considering his limited schooling.
